CHAPTER 31
HARSH
The Frozen Land, contrary to its title, is hot most of the year. Extremely hot, usually scorching somewhere between 96 and 105 degrees. Itâs only during the winter months, a sparse stint between December and February, that its namesake occurs. During those months, the sun no longer sets, yet the temperature drops and holds at somewhere around 60 degrees below zero.
Not much of the wildlife lives through this short period of ice age. Insects, a large portion of vegetation, smaller predators, and prey, they all either die or flee for the unknown shortly after the yearâs end. Whatâs left is the truly strong, perhaps the wicked, the only ones who can endure such conditions. Usually, larger more adept beasts such as bears and wolves are the only ones to be found.
Although the Frozen Land is meant to be a punishment it could be perceived as a test. If a Vampire really has the balls to break protocol and kill in the open, then he had better be able to prove it here. If not, he wonât survive like most of the life in the area, and thereâll be no more than a few scraps of flesh left for the new growth to devour come the following thaw.
It was mid-November when he arrived, so he had less than a month to prepare. One of the conditions of his as well as his co-detaineeâs punishment was to be de-fanged upon arrival. A chemical solution would be injected into each of them. The solution will cause their fangs to dissolve within a few days.
The loss of their fangs will temporarily confine them to a certain space, almost human. They will need to hunt and gather and feed on other than blood and find a suitable shelter before the final vanishing of the moon come December. After that the sun will rule the skies for 3 monthsâ time.
If they hadnât found a place to hide by then or filled their bellies with enough sustenance to last their hibernation, they will perish. It will happen via starvation if they hadnât stored enough food, or the sunâs rays will obliterate them, carrying them away as ashes in the wind.
When he arrived, it was just past midnight, and the moon was in full view. The air was hot, wet, and sticky, stifling, clinging to his clothes as they in turn clung to him.
Malik stepped off the plane, cuffed in iron shackles where he was lined up with the rest of the gang. They were all Vampires, all deviants, all murderers. Their intentions or reasons for their crimes where unknown to Malik for now, but he knew as time went on, he might know their secrets just like they might know his.
They were greeted by an a not so ordinarily tall guard with a gaunt face. He looked to have no emotion as they filed before him. He stood watching, hands clasped behind his back. He could have been enjoying the entire ordeal if only silently. It
